Flight Matcher is a service that allows flight passengers to input their preferences when flying and be matched with seats they can switch into before takeoff. Flight Matcher will be an extension of Delta Airlines' online passenger portal, allowing seat selections to be made after initial ticket purchases.

Challenge

"Flyers are often annoyed when they have to sit beside people with different preferences than them on the plane. This decreases their overall experience."

The Design Process

1. Research
To ensure the selected problem statement accurately represented the needs of users, a survey was created to identify common pain points when flying. We surveyed 30 people and found that the majority of them were frustrated by sitting next to people with different preferences than them on the plane. This reinforces the decision to focus on a solution that will optimize seat arrangements for passengers.
2. Synthesize
To narrow down features and functions, the team listed out personal dislikes when it comes to their experiences onboard.
3. Ideate
As it was decided that the product works according to an algorithm generating the best recommendations to users, data that can be organized and were common among individuals were chosen.

The following categories were prioritized: allergies, noise level, and lighting preferences.
4. Design

Future Iteration and Goals

Due to the scope of this project, I wasn’t able to address every single issue that surfaced. Here are some considerations and areas I would explore for a better solution with more time:
- For the popup notification at the beginning of the user flow, include more information about Flight Matcher so users are aware of what the service does
- Summary pages for the questionnaire can be more clear as users could assume they answered yes to want snacks, having allergies, etc.
- Make the legend more visible when learning about the seat typesThere’s still a lot I’d love to explore and hash out!

As my first design project with developers and dedicated mentors, I enjoyed building an idea from zero to one with my team.
